Biography of Svetlana Volkova

Early Life and Education

Svetlana Volkova is an opera soprano and a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre. She received her musical education at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory in 1974, she joined the opera troupe of the Maly Opera Theatre named after M.P. Mussorgsky (now the Mikhailovsky Theatre). There, she performed roles such as Natasha in "Rusalka," Tatiana in "Eugene Onegin," Zemfira in "Aleko," Mary Stuart in "Mary Stuart" by Slonimsky, Catherine in "The Enchantress," and Zerlina in "Don Giovanni."

Solo Career at the Mariinsky Theatre

Since 1990, Svetlana Volkova has been a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre. She has portrayed numerous leading roles, including Naina in "Ruslan and Lyudmila," Susanna in "Khovanshchina," Olga in "The Maid of Pskov," Larina in "Eugene Onegin," the Queen in "Christmas Eve," Polina in "The Gambler" (concert performance), Fata Morgana in "The Love for Three Oranges," Sonya in "War and Peace," Plushkin in "Dead Souls," Marcelina in "The Marriage of Figaro," Brangäne in "Tristan and Isolde," Fricka in "Das Rheingold" and "Die Walküre," and Herodias in "Salome," among many others.

Discography and Filmography

Svetlana Volkova's discography includes recordings of operas such as "Aleko" (Melodiya), "Eugene Onegin" (performed at the Metropolitan Opera with Dmitry Hvorostovsky), and "War and Peace" (Philips Classics). She has also released a solo album titled "Mirage of Love."

In addition to her stage performances, Svetlana Volkova has appeared in several films, including "Beautiful Helena" (TV film), "Aleko" (with Evgeny Nesterenko; Lenfilm), and "Perikola" (Lenfilm).
