Early Life and Education

Nina Stemme was born on May 11, 1963, in Stockholm, Sweden. While studying business administration and economics at the University of Stockholm, Stemme attended the Stockholm Opera Studio, completing a two-year course. It was during this time that she made her debut in 1989, portraying Cherubino in Cortona, Italy, which led her to consider a career as a professional singer. Stemme completed her training at the National College of Opera in Stockholm in 1994.

Early Career and Achievements

At the beginning of her career, Stemme had small roles in the Royal Swedish Opera, including Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Mimi in La bohème, Euridice in Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck, and Diana in La fedeltà premiata, a lesser-known opera by Haydn. Stemme participated in prestigious vocal competitions such as Operalia, The World Opera Competition, and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Placido Domingo, the founder of Operalia, invited Stemme as the winner of the 1993 competition to perform with him at the Opéra Bastille and later in Munich on January 1, 1994.
