Early Life and Immigration
Sidney Bartlett, born Sasha Baranev in 1900 in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, immigrated with his family to the United States in 1904. Settling in Chicago, he adopted the name Sidney Bartlett.
Education and Career
Bartlett studied journalism at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. He worked as a newspaper reporter before moving to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. His first credited work was in 1933 at RKO Studios. He penned 28 screenplays between 1933 and 1969.
Melville Productions
In the 1950s, Bartlett shifted his focus to film production. He co-founded Melville Productions with actor Gregory Peck in 1956.
Personal Life
Bartlett's notoriety extended beyond his professional life. He gained tabloid attention for his scandalous affairs and three marriages to Hollywood actresses: Alice White, Ellen Drew, and Patricia Owens.
Military Service
During World War II, Bartlett joined the US Army as a captain and was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England.
Return to Hollywood
After the war, Bartlett returned to Hollywood and joined 20th Century Fox as a writer.
Later Years and Death
Sidney Bartlett passed away on May 29, 1978, in Hollywood from cancer.
