Early Life and Education
Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński was a Polish poet who was part of the generation of poets who came to maturity during World War II. After passing the matriculation exam in the Polish underground, he studied at the clandestine University of Warsaw.
Literary Career
Baczyński was a co-founder and editor of the literary almanac Sztuka i Naród ("Art and Nation"), where he published his poetry. He also wrote for the magazine Kultura jutra ("Culture of Tomorrow"). He collaborated with the propaganda department of the Home Army.
Poetic Style
Baczyński's poetry debuted in 1942. His work was characterized by themes of Polish "catastrophism," patriotic sentiment, and Tyrtaean lyrics.
Warsaw Uprising and Death
Baczyński participated in the Warsaw Uprising. He was killed in action on August 16 in the Stare Miasto (Old Town) district. After the uprising, he was buried in the Powązki Military Cemetery.
Legacy
Baczyński's mother's experiences of her son's death are depicted in Czesław Miłosz's famous "Ballad." His poetry has been praised for its maturity and insights into the human condition during wartime.
