A Boy with Lymphedema in Bangladesh
Tajibur Akhtar, a 5-year-old boy from Bangladesh, has a condition known as lymphedema, which has caused his right arm to swell to an astonishing size, weighing over 6 kilograms. Locals have branded him "the devil" due to his appearance and have forced him to live in isolation.

Social Isolation and Discrimination
Tajibur's mother, Parvin Akhtar, is heartbroken by the treatment her son receives. "People are frightened by the abnormal size of his arm," she says. "They say my child scares the other children. They call my son the devil." Parvin adds that Tajibur is unable to attend school or make friends.

Medical Condition and Challenges
Tajibur's arm is three times the size of a normal child's arm, making it difficult for him to balance and walk. "My son spends his days looking at his arm," says Parvin. "He cries and asks me questions. He wonders why his arm is so big compared to everyone else's."
Financial Hardship and Desperation
Tajibur's parents, Parvin and Tofikul, are desperate to get medical help for their son. "I want my child to have a normal life," says Parvin. "But how can we? We simply don't have the money for his treatment." Tofikul, a laborer who earns about $30 a month, has been unable to raise the funds necessary for surgery.
Hope Amidst Adversity
Despite the challenges, the family clings to hope. They have been contacted by social activist Mamun Biswas, who is working to raise awareness about Tajibur's case and advocate for government assistance. "This child needs immediate medical attention," says Biswas.
About Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a condition characterized by abnormal swelling in the tissues. It is most often caused by a parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. Typically, the limbs or genitals become swollen and thickened. The accumulation of fluid can cause the skin to become dark and ulcerated. In severe cases, blood vessels can be damaged, potentially leading to life-threatening complications. Treatment includes antibiotics to fight the parasitic infection and surgery if the swelling becomes too severe.
