Talmy Givón: An Illustrious Linguist

Talmy Givón, a notable American linguist, made significant contributions to the functional linguistics approach, particularly in discourse-oriented syntax.

Early Education

In 1959, Givón graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He later pursued graduate studies, earning a Master of Science in Horticulture in 1962.

Academic Career

In 1966, Givón obtained a Master of Arts in Linguistics. He completed his doctorate in the same field in 1969. From 1968 to 1981, he taught linguistics at UCLA. Subsequently, from 1981 to 2002, he held a position at the University of Oregon, where he chaired the Department of Linguistics until 1985. Givón currently holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Oregon.

Critique of Transformational Grammar

Givón challenged the notion of grammar as a modular system advocated by Noam Chomsky's transformational grammar. He argued that grammar should not be viewed as a collection of isolated modules but rather as a unified representation of language structure and usage.
