Biography of Tamara Abakelia

Tamara Abakelia was a renowned sculptor and graphic artist, and an honored figure in the arts of the Georgian SSR from 1942 onwards. She was born on August 19 (September 1, according to the new style) in 1905 in Khoni, Georgia.

Education and Artistic Style

From 1923 to 1929, Abakelia studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts under the guidance of esteemed professors such as Y.I. Nikoladze, N.P. Kandelaki, E.E. Lanceray, and I.A. Sharlemanya. Her sculptural works were characterized by a romantic uplift, generalization, and monumentality of forms. These qualities were evident in her sculptures, such as the monument to Lesya Ukrainka in Surami (1952), as well as in her graphic works, including illustrations for "The Knight in the Panther's Skin" by Shota Rustaveli (1936-1937), and illustrations and designs for "David of Sasun" (1939) and works by Vazha-Pshavela (1947).

Contributions to Theater and Film
