Spanish Ballerina Tamara Rojo
Tamara Rojo is a renowned Spanish ballerina who achieved success at a young age. She began her training at the School of Victor Ullate and completed her education under the guidance of David Howard and Renato Paroni.
Gold Medal and Critic's Award
At the age of 20, Rojo won the prestigious Gold Medal and Critic's Award at the Paris competition in 1994. The jury, which included Natalia Makarova, Vladimir Vasiliev, and Galina Samsova, unanimously awarded her these honors.
Maturity in Interpretation
From the beginning of her artistic career, Rojo took on roles that required a great level of maturity in interpretation. In the Madrid Ballet, she combined classical technique with her Spanish roots. She also performed in the Scottish Ballet from 1995 to 1997, dancing roles such as Odette-Odile, the Sugar Plum Fairy in "The Nutcracker," and Juliet in John Cranko's "Romeo and Juliet."
International Performances
Rojo's talent brought her to various international stages. She performed with the Nice Opera in the summer, appeared in Geneva and at the Granada Festival, where she danced in "The Triangle" and "Le Danube Bleu." In April 1996, she performed in the one-act opera-ballet "The Birth of Orpheus" by Veggetti-Pizzi, created specifically for her at the Arena di Verona.
London Performances
London audiences had the opportunity to see Rojo during the Christmas season in 1997, as she performed in Derek Deane's production of "The Nutcracker" with the English National Ballet, portraying the role of Clara. As a member of the English National Ballet, Rojo danced roles in ballets such as "The Sleeping Beauty" (Aurora), "Sphinx" and "Solo for Organ" by Glen Tetley, "Cinderella," "Swan Lake," "Paquita," "Coppelia," and "Etudes" by Mikaela Cordier. She also danced Juliet in Derek Deane's "Romeo and Juliet," the lead roles in Christopher Hampson's "Perpetuum Mobile" and "Preludes," and the Chosen One in Kenneth MacMillan's "Spring Waters."
Success and Recognition
Rojo received great acclaim from critics and audiences during the English National Ballet's tours in Hong Kong and Australia. She also received recognition for her performance as Odette-Odile in Derek Deane's "Swan Lake" at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In July 2000, she danced the role of Giselle at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
Royal Ballet and International Galas
Rojo joined the Royal Ballet, where she performed leading roles in "Swan Lake," Antony Tudor's "Shadowplay," "Romeo and Juliet," "Song of the Earth," "Mayerling," and Kenneth MacMillan's "Manon." She also danced in Rudolf Nureyev's "Don Quixote," Natalia Makarova's "La Bayadere" and "The Sleeping Beauty," Mats Ek's "Carmen" and "Giselle," Frederick Ashton's "Undine" and "Cinderella," and many other productions. She was invited as a guest star to perform at La Scala, the Nice Opera, the Arena di Verona, the Scottish Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba, and the Berlin State Opera, as well as participating in numerous international gala concerts. In 1997, she was awarded the Spanish Royal Gold Medal of Fine Arts for her outstanding contributions to the arts.
