Biography of Tao Xianli

Tao Xianli is a 37-year-old Chinese inventor known for his remarkable creations. He gained attention for building a homemade but fully functional submarine and a massive, complex robot standing at 2.1 meters tall. Born in China, Tao dedicated his entire year's earnings of nearly $4,600 to construct and assemble a fully-operational submarine capable of diving up to 10 meters deep. While both Tao and his invention have faced criticism due to the submarine being primarily made from recycled metal barrels, these critiques may simply stem from envy as others failed to build their own personal submarines for less than five thousand dollars.

Early Life and Inventions

Following his relocation to Beijing, Tao pursued various repair works in his quest for creativity. He refused to consider traditional nine-to-five jobs that would hinder his inventiveness. Among his other inventions include an underwater functioning robot and a flying apparatus, although both were deemed less successful compared to his submarine. However, it was this homemade submarine constructed in 2008 that gained significant recognition in the past two years. According to Tao, the equipment on the submarine may be basic, but it is sufficient for the primary functions of the vessel. Most importantly, it provides excellent underwater visibility for passengers.

The Submarine's Features

Resembling a metal cigar, the submarine measures 6.5 meters in length and weighs just under a ton. It offers enough space for a single passenger and basic equipment, such as lighting devices, pressure gauges, oxygen supply apparatus, observation chambers, and a television. Tao tested his invention in Beijing's bodies of water during the cold winter, but he has yet to transport his homemade submarine to the ocean to determine its maximum depth capabilities. Looking at the photographs, it remains unclear how he fits inside the submarine.

Resourcefulness and Dedication

Tao finds the components for his inventions primarily at flea markets and inexpensive stores, while earning a living by working in a karaoke bar. His small and cramped workshop in Beijing provides Spartan conditions. Nevertheless, Tao spent the past year constructing a 480 kg robot from scrap metal and electrical wires. Currently, this impressive creation appears as if it has been transported from a fantastical film to the Chinese inventor's workshop.
