Early Life and CareerTapio Korjus, born on February 10, 1961, in Vehkalahti, Finland, emerged as a renowned javelin thrower during the 1980s. However, his international breakthrough remained elusive until the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
Olympic Triumph
At the Seoul Olympics, Korjus consistently ranked second throughout the competition. In his final attempt, he unleashed an extraordinary throw of 84.28 meters, securing the Olympic gold medal. Young Jan Železný, who would later become a dominant force in javelin, took second place, while Korjus's compatriot Seppo Räty finished third.
Post-Olympic Career
Korjus's Olympic victory became the pinnacle of his career. He soon retired from competition and dedicated himself to coaching. Notably, he mentored several prominent Finnish javelin throwers, including Mikaela Ingberg.
