Early Life and Education
Taras Vyacheslavovych Chornovil was born on July 1, 1964, in Lviv, Ukraine, to dissident journalist Vyacheslav Chornovil and cultural and religious figure Alona Antonych. He pursued a degree in biology at Lviv University and later obtained a qualification in international law at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Lviv University.
Political Activism and Military Service
Chornovil's political activism began in the 1980s. He joined the Ukrainian Helsinki Group in 1985 and co-founded the Union of Independent Ukrainian Youth. Despite serving in the army from 1982-1984, he remained committed to advocating for Ukrainian independence.
Journalism and Political Positions
From 1984-1989, Chornovil worked as a health care professional at a hospital in Lviv. Concurrently, he served as editor of the "Ukrainian Herald" journal and later became chief editor of the newspaper "Young Ukraine." He represented Lviv in the regional council from 1990-1994.
Involvement with the People's Movement of Ukraine
After his father's tragic death in 1999, Chornovil became a political advisor to his father's organization, the People's Movement of Ukraine. He also edited the movement's newspaper, "Chas."
Parliamentary Career
Chornovil was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) in 2000 and re-elected in 2002. He initially joined the "Our Ukraine" faction but later switched to the "Center" and "Regions of Ukraine" factions.
Viktor Yanukovych's Campaign and Later Tenure
In December 2004, Chornovil headed Viktor Yanukovych's campaign during the re-vote of the presidential election second round. He was re-elected to the Parliament in 2006 as a member of the Party of Regions.
Committee Membership
As a member of the Parliament, Chornovil chaired the Subcommittee on Budgetary Provision for Local Government and was a member of the Committee on State Development and Local Government.
