Early Life and EducationBorn in Fortaleza, Brazil, on October 1, 1948, Tasso Jereissati lost his father, Senator Carlos Jereissati, at the tender age of 15. His mother, Maria de Lourdes Ribeiro Jereissati, instilled in him the family's entrepreneurial spirit and supported his pursuit of a degree in business administration.
Business Success
In 1973, Jereissati married Renata Queiroz, the daughter of businessman Edson Queiroz. A year later, he established his own company, the Jereissati Group. By 1982, he had opened the Iguatemi Fortaleza shopping mall, which became one of the largest in the state.
Political Awakening
In the late 1970s, Jereissati joined a group of young entrepreneurs concerned about an economic crisis that threatened to prolong authoritarian rule. He became president of the Ceará Industry Center, which served as a forum for discussing economic, social, and political issues.
Three-Term Governor of Ceará
In 1986, Jereissati was elected governor of Ceará, a historic victory that ended the so-called "Era of Colonels." He served three terms, from 1987 to 2002, during which time he transformed the state's economy and improved the lives of its citizens.

Jereissati implemented innovative measures that significantly improved Ceará's Human Development Index (HDI). He introduced reforms in healthcare, education, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and employment. His second term, from 1995 to 1998, focused on industrial development. His third term, from 1999 to 2002, emphasized social programs that led to a sharp increase in the state's HDI, surpassing the national average.
Senator and National Reformer
In 2002, Jereissati was elected to the Brazilian Senate, succeeding his late father. He served as a "constructive opposition" to the federal government, working on reforms in public safety, regional development, tax reform, and constitutional law.
