Stand-Up Comedian
Ted Alexandro has graced stages on countless late night talk shows and headlined half-hour specials on Comedy Central. Born in Bellerose, Queens, New York, he attended St. Francis Preparatory School. At the tender age of ten, young Ted harbored aspirations of equestrianism. However, his dreams were dashed when his uncle introduced him to horseback riding, an experience he describes as "treacherous."
Early Life and Education
Ted's thwarted equestrian ambitions did not deter him from pursuing other passions. He attended Long Island University, where he majored in music with a focus on jazz piano. His father worked for three decades as a New York City public school teacher in Brooklyn, while his mother stayed home to raise their five children. She later taught religion, health, and sex education at the high school level.
Ted later transferred to Queens College, where he earned his master's degree in elementary education. After graduation, he taught music in elementary school for five years while performing comedy on the side.
Comedy Career
Since then, Alexandro has appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," "Dr. Katz," "The Rob & Joe Show," and two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials. He has also made cameos in the television series "Oz," "Louie," and "Inside Amy Schumer." Time Out NY hailed Ted as one of the "21 linchpins of the New York comedy scene": "As a comic, Ted Alexandro is as New York as a bedrock." Over his two-decade career, he has opened for the likes of Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Louis C.K., Lewis Black, Craig Ferguson, Dennis Miller, Joan Rivers, and Jim Gaffigan.
Activism
Ted is a co-founder of the New York City Comedians Coalition, which successfully advocated for increased wages for comedians at New York comedy clubs. He was heavily involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement and is a co-founder of Occupy Astoria Long Island City.
"Teachers Lounge"
His latest endeavor is the comedy web series "Teachers Lounge," which he co-produced and wrote with his partner and on-screen counterpart, Hollis James. The show features Lewis Black, Jim Gaffigan, Dave Attell, Judah Friedlander, Jim Norton, Judy Gold, Todd Barry, Rachel Feinstein, Michael Che, and musician Ted Leo as teachers hanging out in an elementary school faculty room. In 2014, "Teachers Lounge" won two Cynopsis Digital Media Awards: "Best New Comedy Web Series" and "Jim Gaffigan" for Best Guest Appearance in a Comedy Web Series.
