Hartley Sawyer was born on January 25, 1985, in San Jose, California. His passion for acting emerged at the tender age of 5 when he participated in a stage play.

Rising Star on 'The Young and the Restless'

Hartley Sawyer's breakthrough came in March 2013 when he landed the role of Kyle Abbott in the long-running CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless." He made his debut on April 24th of the same year. However, in December 2013, it was announced that he would be leaving the show, with his final appearance airing on January 27, 2014.

Post-'The Young and the Restless' Projects

Following his departure from "The Young and the Restless," Sawyer appeared in the thriller "Kept Man" and the comedy "Geek & Sundry" in 2014. In 2015, he hosted and co-wrote the documentary series "Courageous Leaders" and starred in the short film "SPiN."

Joining the CW Superhero Universe

In July 2017, Sawyer joined the cast of The CW superhero drama "The Flash" as Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man, a private detective with the ability to stretch his body. He made his first appearance in October 2017 in the fourth episode of season 4, titled "Elongated Journey into Night." The following June, he was promoted to a series regular.

Controversy and Dismissal

In May 2020, Sawyer became embroiled in controversy when several racist and misogynistic screenshots of tweets he had written from 2009 to 2014 resurfaced after he had made comments about the Black Lives Matter movement. The actor apologized on his Instagram account on May 30th, saying, "My words, both printed and spoken, were and are wrong. I apologize to everyone who's been hurt by anything I've ever said." Shortly afterward, Sawyer deleted his Twitter account. Within a week, Sawyer was fired from his role on "The Flash" by Warner Bros. The CW released a statement, saying, "We do not tolerate derogatory remarks that target any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation." The show's executive producer, Eric Wallace, and star, Grant Gustin, expressed concern about Sawyer's actions, and Wallace vowed to make changes to the show's work environment.

Post-'The Flash' Career

Following his dismissal from "The Flash," Sawyer has continued to pursue acting. He appeared in the films "After Midnight" (2021) and "The Wrong Cheerleader" (2022). He has also lent his voice to animated projects such as "RWBY" (2019-2022) and "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder" (2022).
