Biography of Terry Matthews
Early Life and EducationTerry Matthews, a Welsh-Canadian businessman and technology specialist, was born in Newport, South Wales. He grew up in Newbridge, Caerphilly and attended Swansea University, where he earned a degree in electronics in 1969.

Career Beginnings
After completing his studies, Matthews interned at the British Telecom research laboratory. He then relocated to Ottawa, Canada, where he began working at MicroSystems International. In 1972, Matthews launched his first project with his colleague Michael Cowpland. They planned to fund their own venture by selling lawnmowers, but unfortunately, their initial batch was lost, and they didn't make any profits. This experience taught Matthews the importance of precise timing in any business endeavor.

Founding Mitel and Newbridge Networks
Matthews and Cowpland founded Mitel, a consulting group that collaborated with various high-tech projects in Ottawa. Mitel worked with organizations such as the National Research Council and the Communications Research Centre. Over time, the company expanded its focus to include the development of microchips and semiconductor devices. In 1985, British Telecom acquired a controlling stake in Mitel. Following the acquisition, Matthews founded Newbridge Networks, which specialized in data transmission networks, particularly routers and ATM devices. By the year 2000, the company employed over 6,500 people. In 2000, Alcatel acquired Newbridge Networks for $7.1 billion, making Matthews the largest shareholder of Alcatel.

Later Ventures
After the sale of Newbridge Networks, Matthews made an unexpected move by repurchasing Mitel. Through active investments, Matthews transformed the company into a major telecommunications giant. The firm focused on innovations in voice telephony and received investments of around $600 million in 2006 alone.
Legacy and Other Projects
Despite relocating to Canada at a relatively young age, Matthews maintained a strong interest in his Welsh roots. One of his notable projects in Wales is the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport. Currently, his eldest son manages the resort, while his younger son, Trevor Matthews, leads the company "Brookstreet Pictures," which Matthews also founded.
