Early Life and Education

Teresa Berganza, a renowned Spanish mezzo-soprano, was born in Madrid, Spain. She began her musical training at the Madrid Conservatory under Lola Rodríguez Aragón, a pupil of Elisabeth Schumann.

Professional Debut and Opera Career

Berganza's professional debut came in a concert in Madrid in 1955. Her operatic debut followed two years later in Aix-en-Provence as Dorabella in Mozart's "Così fan tutte." After successful appearances at the Glyndebourne and Edinburgh festivals, she received invitations from major opera houses worldwide.

In 1960, Berganza debuted at Covent Garden as Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," a role that would become a signature in her repertoire. Subsequent years saw her perform on opera stages in Chicago, New York (debuting at the Metropolitan Opera in 1967), Vienna, Paris, and Salzburg.

Collaborations and Recordings

For many years, pianist Felix Lavilla served as Berganza's accompanist, and they were married from 1957 to 1977. During the 1970s, Berganza starred in film adaptations of "The Barber of Seville," "Don Giovanni," "Werther," and "Carmen."

Later Career and Legacy

Berganza retired from the opera stage in the late 1970s, focusing primarily on concert performances. She participated in the opening ceremonies of the Seville World Fair and Barcelona Olympics in 1992. In 1994, she became the first woman elected to the Spanish Royal Academy of Arts.

Today, Berganza teaches at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid and gives master classes worldwide. Her exceptional vocal abilities, including flexibility, flawless articulation, and exceptional coloratura technique, have allowed her to perform demanding roles in operas by Rossini and Mozart.

Renowned for her portrayal of Carmen, Berganza has performed the role in major opera houses globally. In addition to her operatic repertoire, she is also celebrated for her performances of Spanish songs and romances.
