Early Life and Education
Thay Thi Lien was born in Vietnam and began learning piano at a young age. Despite her talent, she was unable to pursue a musical career until 1946, when family circumstances allowed her to travel abroad for studies. She first went to Paris and then Prague.
Marriage and Revolutionary Activities
In Paris, Thay Thi Lien married a close associate of Ho Chi Minh. She accompanied him during various guerrilla operations against the French colonial regime. In 1951, she graduated from the Prague Conservatory with a degree in piano performance.
Musical Career in Vietnam
After Ho Chi Minh came to power, Thay Thi Lien published a collection of piano arrangements of Vietnamese folk songs. In 1956, she co-founded the first Vietnamese music school, which later became the Hanoi Conservatory. For two decades, she led the piano department there.
Life in Canada and Final Years
In 1995, Thay Thi Lien moved to Canada with her son, Dang Thai Son. Despite suffering a minor stroke, she made her last public performance in 2017 to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Death and Legacy
Thay Thi Lien passed away on January 31, 2023, in Hanoi. She was a renowned pianist, music educator, and a significant figure in the development of Vietnamese music.
