Biography of Theo Fleury
Theoren Wallace 'Theo' Fleury was born in 1968 in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, Canada. He grew up in a troubled family, with a father who had to give up his dream of playing hockey due to a leg injury and struggled with alcoholism, and a mother who battled drug addiction. Despite these challenges, Fleury developed a strong passion for hockey from a young age.
Early Life and Hockey Career
Fleury spent the early years of his life in Williams Lake, British Columbia, before his family moved to Russell, Manitoba. As a child, he faced aggression and bullying due to his small stature, which fueled his determination to prove himself on the ice. Fleury discovered his aggressive playing style and talent for attacking during his teenage years.
He began his hockey career in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, playing for the St. James Canadians in the 1982-1983 season. He quickly gained attention for his skill, scoring 22 goals and 31 assists in just 22 games. Fleury continued to impress as he played for the Moose Jaw Warriors in Winnipeg during the 1984-1985 season, recording 29 goals and 46 assists in 71 games.
In the 1987-1988 season, Fleury had a breakthrough year, scoring 68 goals and 92 assists, totaling 160 points. Despite his small stature, which never exceeded 165 centimeters, Fleury's talent and aggressive playing style made him a formidable force on the ice.
NHL Career and Achievements
Fleury was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 1988 NHL Draft. He went on to play for various teams, including the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, and Chicago Blackhawks. Throughout his NHL career, which spanned from 1989 to 2003, Fleury played over 1000 games.
Known for his powerful and aggressive playing style, Fleury often found himself involved in on-ice conflicts with both players and coaches. Despite these challenges, he represented the Canadian national team twice in the Winter Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in 2002.
Life After Hockey
Fleury struggled with drug addiction and battled Crohn's disease throughout his hockey career. In 2003, he retired from professional hockey but later attempted a comeback, which was unsuccessful.
After leaving the sport, Fleury became a successful businessman, opening a concrete production company. He also organized numerous charitable golf tournaments, raising over a million dollars to support the fight against Crohn's disease. Additionally, Fleury ventured into the fashion industry, launching his clothing brand "FAKE" in 2008.
Fleury co-authored an autobiographical book called "Playing with Fire" in 2009, which became a bestseller. In the book, he candidly discussed his struggles with addiction and revealed details of the sexual abuse he endured from his former coach, Graham James. James later pleaded guilty to the charges. Fleury became an advocate for sexual abuse survivors and pursued a career as a motivational speaker.
