René Bourque: A Journeyman Forward
René Bourque, a Canadian professional ice hockey forward, has carved a path through various NHL teams throughout his career.
Early Career and AHL Success
Bourque's hockey journey began at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played for four years. Undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft, he later signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Bourque spent his first professional season with the Norfolk Admirals, Chicago's AHL affiliate. In a remarkable season, he broke the team's single-season goal record with 33 markers and led the team in scoring with 60 points. His exceptional performance earned him the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding rookie.
Breakthrough in Chicago
The following season, Bourque made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks. He spent three seasons with Chicago, gradually improving his offensive production. However, he struggled to consistently score at a high level.
Flourishing in Calgary
In 2009, Bourque was traded to the Calgary Flames. It was in Calgary that he experienced his most successful years to date. He became a regular on the team's top lines and significantly increased his scoring output. For the first time in his career, he surpassed the 20-goal mark each season.
Montreal, Anaheim, and Columbus
In January 2012, Bourque was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. After a brief stint with the Canadiens, he was assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL and eventually traded to the Anaheim Ducks. In 2015, Bourque was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Accolades and Legacy
René Bourque holds the distinction of winning the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award in 2005 as the AHL's top rookie.
Personal Life and Legacy
Despite his French-sounding name, René Bourque is not a French-Canadian and does not speak French. He is of Canadian Indigenous descent. He is also not related to former NHL star Ray Bourque. However, his cousin, Wayne Bourque, is a three-time Golden Gloves champion in the Indigenous middleweight division.
Bourque is actively involved in philanthropy and the promotion of sports. His René Bourque Hockey Fund has provided financial assistance to underprivileged children participating in hockey. He also initiated the "Bourque Buddies" program, which rewarded Sarcee First Nation students for academic success with tickets to Flames games.
