Early Life and Career
Térèse Marquois was born to a mechanic father in Lyon, France. She began her performing career as a dancer and actress in a provincial troupe. In 1653, she married René Berthelot, an actor in Molière's company, and took the stage name Madame Duparc.
Molière's Troupe and Acclaim
Duparc joined Molière's troupe and quickly rose to prominence with her beauty and dramatic talent. She performed in front of King Louis XIV in 1658. However, she later left Molière to join Pierre Corneille's company at the Théâtre du Marais.
The Tragic Star
In 1666, Duparc joined the Comédie-Française and received her greatest acclaim for her performance in Racine's "Andromaque." She became an instant sensation, captivating the hearts of noblemen who showered her with riches and titles.
Mysterious Death
Duparc died suddenly at the age of 35 in 1668. Rumors circulated that she was poisoned, but it is more likely that her death was caused by complications from pregnancy and a miscarriage.
