Supreme Court Judge Russell Brown

Appointment and Tenure

Russell Brown is a current Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, appointed by Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008. As a Puisne Justice, his tenure may extend until 2027.

Early Life and Education

Born in Kingston, Ontario, Brown earned a Bachelor of Music (1973) and a Bachelor of Laws (1976) from Queen's University.

Qualification Process

Prior to his appointment, Harper stated that Brown would not be sworn in as a judge until he had answered questions from an all-party House of Commons committee. Brown subsequently fulfilled this requirement, allowing for his official appointment. Prime Minister Harper acknowledged that the delay caused by this process could have hindered his ability to effectively fulfill his constitutional duties and emphasized the importance of its timely completion.
