Thomas Campbell Eyton: A British Naturalist

Early Life and Education

Thomas Campbell Eyton was born in Eyton Hall, Shropshire, England, to Thomas Eyton. He attended Cambridge University alongside his close friend, Charles Robert Darwin.

Natural History Museum

In 1855, Eyton inherited Eyton Hall and established a large natural history museum on the property. He was a fellow of the Linnean and Zoological Societies of London.

Artistic Transitions in Ornithology

Eyton's works marked the transition from engraving to lithography in ornithological illustration. His 1836 publication, "A History of the Rarer British Birds," featured woodcuts and complemented Thomas Bewick's "History of British Birds."

Contributions to Ornithology

In 1838, Eyton published "A Monograph on the Anatidæ or Duck Tribe," which included six hand-colored lithographs by Edward Lear and numerous monochrome plates. His "Osteologia Avium" (1867) and its first supplement (1869) are housed in the Cornell University Library.
