John Hales
Early Life and EducationJohn Hales was an English economist born in 1584. He attended Oxford University, graduating without a degree in 1591.
Economic Views
Hales was a proponent of moderate mercantilism, believing in the importance of government regulation to protect domestic industries. He vehemently opposed high interest rates, arguing that they stifled economic growth.
Major Work
Hales's most notable work, "Tract against the High Rate of Usure," was published in 1623. It was reprinted several times, including in 1641 and 1668 as an appendix to Joshua Child's "Discourse of Trade."
Personal Life
Hales was married to Elizabeth, the daughter of John Chayney Ghastlinge. They had eleven children, including three sons and eight daughters.
