Biography of Mario Monti

Mario Monti is an Italian statesman, economist, and lifelong senator. He was born on March 19, 1943, in Varese, Italy. Monti graduated from Bocconi University, where he earned a degree in economics. He then pursued a postgraduate degree at Yale University, studying under Nobel laureate James Tobin.

After completing his education, Monti became a professor of economics at the University of Turin from 1970 to 1985. In 1989, he was appointed as the rector of Bocconi University, and in 1994, he became the university's president. Monti also served as the first president of the Bruegel Institute, an economic research organization, starting in 2005.

Apart from his academic career, Monti played key roles in various institutions. He was a member of the Trilateral Commission and the Bilderberg Group. He also served as an international advisor for companies like Goldman Sachs and The Coca-Cola Company.

In 1995, Monti began his tenure as the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, a position he held until 1999. He then served as the European Commissioner for Competition from 1999 to 2004. During his time as a European Commissioner, Monti represented Italy's interests in the European Union.

In 2009, Monti became a member of the Commission on the Future of Europe. On September 15, 2010, he officially supported the initiative of the Spinelli Group, which aimed to strengthen European integration.

On November 9, 2011, Monti was appointed as a senator for life by the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano. Just three days later, on November 12, 2011, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Italy. Monti also took on the role of Minister of Economy and Finance when the government was formed on November 16.

Throughout his career, Monti has received several honors and awards. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on November 29, 2004. He was also named a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on December 27, 1992.

Monti is married and has two children. He continues to be involved in politics and economics, using his expertise to contribute to the development and progress of Italy and the European Union.
