Thomas Jane: An American Actor's Journey from Indie to Hollywood

Born Thomas Elliott III on January 29, 1969, in Baltimore, Maryland, Thomas Jane is an American actor of Irish, Italian, and German descent. His journey took him from low-budget independent productions to A-list Hollywood projects.

Early Life and Career

Growing up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Virginia, Jane dropped out of school at seventeen to pursue an acting career in India. He later returned to the United States to study acting, eventually making his way to Los Angeles. In 1992, he landed minor roles in Edgar Michael Bravo's "I'll Love You Forever...Tonight" and Fran Rubel Kuzui's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Breakthrough Roles

Jane's breakthrough came in 1997 when he played Neil Cassidy in Gurinder Chadha's Indian film "The Last Time I Committed Suicide." The same year, he portrayed Todd Parker in Paul Thomas Anderson's critically acclaimed drama "Boogie Nights." His role alongside John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in John Woo's action thriller "Face/Off" further elevated his status.

Hollywood Stardom

Jane continued to gain recognition through films such as Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line" (1998), Renny Harlin's "Deep Blue Sea" (1999), Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" (1999), Stephen Hopkins' "Under Suspicion" (2000), Michael Cristofer's "Original Sin" (2001), and Jonathan Hensleigh's "The Punisher" (2004). He also became known to television audiences for his portrayal of baseball legend Mickey Mantle in Billy Crystal's historical drama "61."

Personal Life

Outside of his acting career, Jane is an avid fan of the alternative rock band The White Stripes. He has been married twice, first to Ayesha Hauer and then to actress Patricia Arquette in June 2006. Jane and Arquette have one daughter, Harlow.

Legal Troubles

On March 17, 2008, Jane was arrested for driving under the influence in Kern County, California. His blood alcohol level was over the legal limit, and his license had been suspended.
