American Olympian and 1896 Summer Games champion, Thomas Burke, left an indelible mark in the world of track and field.

As a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Burke journeyed to Athens as part of the Boston Athletic Association for the inaugural modern Olympics. On April 6, he competed in the 100-meter preliminary heats and successfully qualified by winning his group.
110-Meter Hurdle Triumph
On April 7, Burke faced off against his rivals in the 110-meter hurdle preliminary heats. On April 10, the final races took place, with Burke choosing to withdraw from the 100-meter sprint. However, in the 110-meter hurdles, he emerged victorious, edging out British runner Grantley Goulding by a narrow margin.
Beyond Track: Photography and Innovation
Burke's passions extended beyond athletics to photography. As a keen photographer, he captured numerous images of Athens during his time there. Additionally, he is credited with contributing to the development of the electric toaster.
