Thomas Teneti: From Eating to Starvation
Thomas Teneti, a kiwi-like man from Rangitukia, New Zealand, attempted to "eat himself to death" due to his unconventional preference. However, he shed an astonishing 104 kg (229 lbs) in just five months after sharing his "deepest, darkest secret" with his nephew.
The Turning Point
At his heaviest, Thomas weighed approximately 300 kg (661 lbs). Terrified of his family's reaction to his homosexuality, he resorted to excessive eating to end his life. "Some people do it with a rope or a gun," said Thomas. "For me, it was food."
Overwhelmed by fear, Thomas confessed his secret to his nephew before "dying." His nephew's response was life-changing: "That's no reason to give up on life. We can't change other people or the way they think."
Coming out
Inspired by his nephew's words, Thomas gathered his family and revealed his sexual orientation. He expressed that he no longer sought their understanding or acceptance; he merely wanted them to know his truth.
To Thomas's surprise, his mother responded, "I've always known; I just didn't ask." While his devout father was initially shocked, he did not react with anger or rejection. Instead, Thomas felt "a sense of love and support" that he had been yearning for.
Overcoming Fear
Reflecting on his past fears, Thomas realized the reasons behind his secrecy. "I guess I was afraid of the shame, but mostly I didn't come clean, I didn't open up, I didn't talk to my parents because of fear."
Embracing Health
Now residing in Pimpama, Queensland, Australia, the liberated Thomas has ditched his high-calorie takeaway meals in favor of protein-rich dishes. His daily diet typically includes fish or chicken with vegetables, supplemented by three liters of water.
This marked a significant change from his previous regime, which involved consuming four takeaway dishes each night. "I could eat half or the whole pizza and still be hungry," he recalled. "Not to mention the sides. My old diet was working against me. Food had become a drug."
Transformation Through PHATT
After enrolling in the PHATT (Putting Health At The Top) program, Thomas shed 104 kg in five months. Not only did he lose weight, but he also experienced a "massive change in mindset."
Impressed by the program, Thomas became a PHATT mentor and counselor himself. Although reaching his weight loss goals was his primary objective, Thomas considers his newfound ability to inspire others an unexpected perk.
