Biography of Thug Behram
Thug Behram, also known as Thug Bhairav, was an Indian killer who was born in 1778 near Delhi. From a young age, he stood out among his peers for his immense stature and strength. At the age of 12, he committed his first ritualistic murder, marking the beginning of his deadly career.
Leader of the Thugee Cult
From 1790 to 1830, Behram led a secretive Indian cult known as the Thugee Cult. The members of this cult specialized in targeting travelers, initially appearing helpful before robbing and killing them. They believed that each murder prevented the arrival of the goddess of destruction and chaos, Kali. Behram and his accomplices used a special ritualistic silk cloth to strangle their unsuspecting victims, ensuring they could claim their plundered belongings.
A Notorious Serial Killer
The exact number of victims attributed to Behram and his gang is still debated, with estimates ranging from 50,000 to 1 million over the course of their existence. Behram himself admitted to personally participating in over 900 murders, strangling 125 of them with his own hands. Subsequent investigations confirmed a total of 921 killings linked to him.
The Exposed Cult
The Thugee Cult operated in secrecy for centuries, with the British authorities remaining unaware of their existence for a long time. However, in the early 19th century, their activities were finally exposed. From the 1830s onwards, the authorities actively hunted down and punished members of the cult, including Behram.
Death and Legacy
Behram, who was revered as a demi-god among his followers, was captured by the authorities. Fearing that the remaining Thugs would attempt to rescue him, he was swiftly executed by hanging after his trial in 1840. Rumors suggest that Behram betrayed many of his accomplices to the authorities.
Thug Behram is remembered today as one of the most prolific serial killers in history, responsible for a large number of gruesome murders during his reign as the leader of the Thugee Cult.
