Biography of Tia Mowry
Tia Dashon Mowry is an American actress who gained her first taste of fame for her role as the twin sister of actress Tamera Mowry in the sitcom "Sister, Sister". She was born on July 6, 1978, in Gelnhausen, West Germany. Her mother, Darlene Flowers, managed her childhood career while also working in security services. Her father, Timothy Mowry, was in the United States Army at the time of her birth and later became a police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department when the family moved to California. Tia's mother is African American and her father is Italian American; her parents met in high school in Miami, Florida, and both served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of sergeant. The Mowry family is tight-knit and deeply religious; the sisters were dedicated to Christianity at the age of eight. Tia is the older sister and has two siblings, Tahj and Tavior Mowry. She is younger than her twin sister, Tamera Mowry, by just two minutes.
Early Career
Mowry and her sister began participating in various productions and talent shows when their family lived in Texas. At the age of twelve, they convinced their mother that it was time to move to California and allow them to try their hand at acting. Their mother agreed, but on the condition that they find acting jobs within a month of their stay in California. In 1990, the Mowry family moved permanently to California, settled in Los Angeles, and Tia and her sister Tamera started working in commercials and other small roles. Tia is best known for her role as Tia Landry, the separated-at-birth twin who reunites with her sister as a teenager, in the show "Sister, Sister". The series was created specifically for them after a producer saw them on the set of the family sitcom "Full House", in which their brother had a recurring role. "Sister, Sister" originally aired on ABC, but after a two-year run, the network canceled the show. It was then picked up by Warner Bros. and continued for another four years, delighting viewers with the ongoing story of the twin sisters. During the run of the series, the sisters also made a guest appearance on the show "Smart Guy", which starred their brother Tahj. Tia and Tamera also worked behind the scenes as voice actors in the animated series "Detention" for the children's channel Kids' WB.
Later Career
After "Sister, Sister" came to an end, the sisters enrolled at Pepperdine University to study psychology. Tia also traveled to Europe to study humanities and learn the Italian language. Both Tia and her sister appeared in the comedy film "The Hot Chick" alongside comedian Rob Schneider, playing cheerleaders. Mowry also voiced the character of Sasha in the animated series "Bratz". In 2005, the actress and her sister joined the star-studded cast of the Disney Channel movie "Twitches", and later reprised her role as Alex Fielding in the sequel "Twitches Too". She also made a guest appearance on her sister's TV show, "Strong Medicine", in January 2006, playing Keisha, Tamera Mowry's twin sister (Dr. Kayla Thornton on the show). Tia landed the starring role of Melanie Barnett in the TV series "The Game" on the CW channel, starting in 2006. In 2007, the actress appeared in an episode of the reality show "America's Next Top Model". In addition, she has appeared in television series such as "Dangerous Women", "Are You Afraid of the Dark?", "Scream: The TV Series", "Friends", "Love, Inc.", and "Blue's Clues". In 2000, Tia played the role of Sydney Donovan in the comedy film "Seventeen Again", in 2007 she portrayed Kate in the drama film "The American Standards", and the following year she was cast as Kendra in the horror film "Hollywood Horror".
Awards and Personal Life
In 1999 and 2000, Tia was awarded "Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series" at the Image Awards for her role in "Sister, Sister", and she was nominated for the same award at the 2008 Image Awards. From 1995 to 1997, Mowry won the "Favorite Television Actress" award at the Kids' Choice Awards for her role in "Sister, Sister". She was also nominated for a Teen Choice Award and an NAACP Image Award in the category of "Best Actress in a Comedy".
Currently, Tia Mowry resides in Los Angeles with her Chihuahua named Chico and her husband, actor Cory Hardrict, whom she married in 2008.
