Biography of Tim David Minchin
Early Life and EducationTim David Minchin was born on October 7, 1975, in Northampton, United Kingdom. At the age of seven, Tim started learning to play the piano but quit after three years as he did not find any enjoyment in it. However, after he began writing music with his brother, guitarist Dan Minchin, Tim returned to the piano. Despite his almost virtuosic playing, he referred to himself as someone who simply "bangs on the keys." He grew up in Perth, Australia, and attended the University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
Rise to Fame
In 2002, Tim moved to Melbourne, where he began developing his talents and gaining recognition through his show "Dark Side." However, his breakthrough success came at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, both in 2005.
Career
In addition to several small roles on Australian television, Minchin has a rich theater experience, including leading roles in the plays "Amadeus" and "Hamlet" and appearing in Reg Cribb's Australian play "The Return." He also wrote the song "Drowned" and acted in the Australian drama "Two Fists, One Heart" in 2008. Currently, he serves as one of the writers for the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel "Matilda" with Dennis Kelly and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Minchin has also written a pilot project that has attracted interest from several US television networks and has been in negotiations for his documentary biopic "Rock N Roll Nerd," which aired on ABC1 in 2009. He defines his genre as "funny cabaret show" and considers himself primarily a musician and songwriter rather than a comedian.
Eccentric Performances
In his performances, Tim often appears barefoot, with disheveled hair and heavy eye makeup, and sings funny songs while accompanying himself on the piano. This eccentric behavior allows him to distance himself from reality enough to create whatever he wants on stage without "annoying (most) people." He believes that performing without shoes is more comfortable for him, and the eye makeup makes his facial features more expressive to the audience.
Personal Life
Tim Minchin currently resides in London with his wife Sarah, whom he has been with since the age of 17 and married in 2001. The couple welcomed their daughter Violet on November 24, 2006, and celebrated the birth of their son Caspar on June 3, 2009. In his songs, Tim often sings about his family and shares anecdotes about his relationship with his wife during his comedic performances.
