Biography of Tim McGrath

Tim McGrath is an American man from Michigan who has shown incredible resilience in the face of adversity. At the age of 38, he was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer. A grapefruit-sized tumor began to grow on his face, leaving him with only half of his facial features.

Struggles with Synovial Sarcoma

In February 2014, McGrath first learned about his condition when he sought medical help for severe jaw pain. An MRI revealed an egg-sized tumor, but he chose to forego surgery and spent the next 18 months searching for alternative treatments, all of which proved unsuccessful. Unfortunately, synovial sarcoma is resistant to many treatments, including chemotherapy, and McGrath's cancer continued to grow.

His condition worsened in May 2015 when the tumor doubled in size, leading to a tracheotomy to help him breathe and the need for a feeding tube since the tumor invaded his mouth area. Massive radiation doses caused the tumor to shrink and disintegrate over time, allowing McGrath to regain control of his mouth and swallow small amounts of food.

Reconstruction Journey

In October 2015, McGrath underwent a 30-hour surgery to remove the remaining tumor and reconstruct his face. The prognosis before the surgery was grim, with expectations of losing his left eye and left ear. However, McGrath remained hopeful, believing that such sacrifices were justified. After the surgery, he experienced a shock when he woke up. Surgeons had removed parts of his face and bone structures, as well as muscle tissue from his back, rib, and shoulder.

Initially, his body rejected the transplanted tissues, and he endured multiple infections and complications. However, in April 2016, McGrath decided to switch surgeons and became a patient of Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate, a renowned reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Chaiyasate successfully reconstructed McGrath's facial structures using skin and muscles from his left leg and left forearm, along with a skin graft from his forehead. McGrath has since undergone over 20 surgeries, with none of Dr. Chaiyasate's procedures resulting in rejection.

Continuing the Journey

Dr. Chaiyasate plans to resume McGrath's facial reconstruction in winter 2018, with the goal of restoring his ability to eat and drink normally. Despite the challenges, McGrath remains grateful for his family and friends' support and the funds raised through various campaigns, which saved him from significant financial burden. He acknowledges the immense cost of his treatment, with a hospital bill of $1.2 million within the first eight weeks.

Inspiring Others

Throughout his journey, McGrath has found the strength to share his story and hopes to inspire others to appreciate the things they take for granted. With synovial sarcoma being a rare and often undetectable cancer, he urges people to seek medical advice if they notice any suspicious lumps or abnormalities under their skin.

Tim McGrath's journey has been long and arduous, but he remains resilient and optimistic. His perseverance and the remarkable support he has received serve as a testament to the power of hope and determination in the face of adversity.
