Early Career and Karting Success
In 1998, at the age of 15, Timo Glock embarked on his racing career. He excelled in karting, winning various championships. Notably, he triumphed in the BMW ADAC Formula Junior Cup in 2000 and the Formula BMW ADAC in 2001.
Formula Racing Journey
Glock transitioned to single-seater racing in 2002, competing in German Formula 3 and finishing third overall as a rookie of the year. In 2003, he raced in the Formula 3 Euro Series, securing three race wins and five podium finishes, resulting in a fifth-place championship ranking.
Jordan Formula 1
Glock made his Formula 1 debut in 2004 as a test driver for Jordan. During the Canadian Grand Prix, he stepped in for Giorgio Pantano, finishing 11th and later moving up to 7th due to disqualifications, earning his first two championship points.
Switching to Champ Car
In 2005, Glock raced in the Champ Car World Series with Rocketsports. He achieved his best result with a second-place finish in Montreal, ultimately placing eighth overall and earning the rookie of the year award.
Success in GP2 and Debut with Toyota
Glock joined the GP2 series in 2006, initially with BCN Competicion. Later, he moved to iSport International, improving his performance with two victories and three podiums. He finished the championship in fourth place. In December 2006, he signed with BMW Sauber as a test driver for the 2007 season.
GP2 Championship Victory
During the 2007 GP2 season, Glock emerged victorious, securing five race wins and five additional podium finishes. Due to Robert Kubica's severe accident in Canada, Glock was considered for the following race in the US, but Sebastian Vettel ultimately took his place. Vettel's promotion to Scuderia Toro Rosso led to Glock's role as BMW's main test driver.
Transition to Toyota Formula 1
After his GP2 success, Glock negotiated with several Formula 1 teams and ultimately signed with Toyota in 2008, despite his existing contract with BMW. The Contract Recognition Board resolved the issue, allowing Glock to race for Toyota.
Career Highlights and Championship Contention
Glock earned his first Formula 1 points in 2008 at the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing fourth. He later achieved a second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix and a fourth-place result in the history-making night race in Singapore.
In the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, Glock's decision to remain on dry tires while the majority of drivers switched to intermediates gave Lewis Hamilton a crucial advantage. Hamilton's overtaking maneuver allowed him to clinch the 2008 championship. Glock finished the season in tenth place with 25 points.
Manor Grand Prix
In 2010, Glock joined the newly formed Manor Grand Prix as its race driver. He partnered with Lucas di Grassi, his former GP2 rival.
Personal Life
Timo Glock resides in Switzerland with his partner, German model Isabel Reis. The couple maintains a close relationship with Team Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen and his British partner, Catherine Hyde.
