Biography of Timothy Dolan
Timothy Michael Dolan is an American priest and prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born on February 6, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri, as the eldest of five children to Robert Dolan and Shirley Radcliffe. His father, Robert Dolan, was an aviation engineer who worked for McDonnell Douglas.
Early Life and Education
Dolan developed a strong interest in the church from an early age and had always dreamed of becoming a priest. In 1964, he enrolled in the St. Louis Preparatory Seminary in Shrewsbury. He later attended Cardinal Glennon College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. Cardinal John Carberry sent Dolan to Rome to continue his studies, where he obtained a licentiate in theology.
Priesthood and Academic Career
Dolan was ordained a priest on June 19, 1976, by Archbishop Edward O'Meara. He served as an assistant pastor in Richmond Heights until 1979 before pursuing further studies at the Catholic University of America. There, he specialized in the history of the American Church and wrote his dissertation on Archbishop Edwin O'Hara.
From 1983 to 1987, Dolan served as a pastor while also working with Archbishop John May on the reformation of the archdiocesan seminary. He then became the secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., acting as a liaison between American dioceses and the nunciature.
In 1992, Dolan was appointed vice-rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and also served as a spiritual director and history instructor. He became the rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome in 1994. During his tenure, he published the book "Priests for the Third Millennium." In the same year, he was honored with the title of Monsignor.
Archbishop of Milwaukee and New York
On June 19, 2001, Dolan was consecrated as an auxiliary bishop of St. Louis by Pope John Paul II. He was then appointed Archbishop of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 25, 2002. Dolan served in Milwaukee for seven years before being named the 10th Archbishop of New York.
The Archdiocese of New York, second in size only to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, has approximately 2.5 million parishioners under the leadership of Archbishop Dolan. He was formally installed in New York on April 15, 2009, and received the pallium from Pope Benedict XVI on June 29 during a ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica.
Throughout his career, Archbishop Timothy Dolan has been known for his leadership, dedication to the Church, and commitment to preserving its history. He continues to serve as a prominent figure in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.
