Early Life and Career
Todd Martin, a former American tennis player, was born in Hinsdale, Illinois. He began his professional career in 1990 after playing two years of collegiate tennis at Northwestern University.
Rise to Prominence
Martin's breakthrough season came in 1994. He reached the finals of the Australian Open, where he faced Pete Sampras. Although he lost, he became the only player to win a set against Sampras in that tournament. Martin also reached the semifinals of Wimbledon and the US Open, where he was defeated by Andre Agassi.
Grand Slam Victories and Continued Success
In 1995, Martin reached the finals of the Grand Slam Cup. The following year, he made another Wimbledon semifinal appearance before suffering an injury that sidelined him for much of 1997. Upon his return in 1998, he captured singles titles in Barcelona and Stockholm.
Martin continued to perform well in 1999, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He advanced to the final of the US Open but lost to Agassi. In 2000, he reached the semifinals of the US Open before being defeated by Marat Safin, who went on to win the tournament.
Retirement and Later Career
Martin retired from professional tennis in 2004. He later participated in the Outback Champions Series, winning the event in 2007. From August 2009 to April 2010, he served as an assistant coach for Novak Djokovic, working primarily on developing Djokovic's serve. However, Martin's departure from the coaching staff was attributed to differences with Djokovic's primary coach.
