Tom Adelson: Democratic Oklahoma Statesman
Early Life and EducationTom Adelson was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Edison High School and pursued higher education at Stanford University. Adelson then obtained his law degree from the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University.
Political Career
Oklahoma State Senate:Adelson served as Oklahoma's first Secretary of Health under Governor Brad Henry from 2003 to 2004. In 2004, he was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate, representing the 33rd District in Tulsa. Adelson was a key player in expanding Medicaid coverage to tens of thousands of Oklahoma children through his "Covering Kids" legislation.
Mayoral Candidacy:
In 2009, Adelson announced his candidacy for mayor of Tulsa. He faced 11 Republican contenders in the primary, including Dewey F. Bartlett, Jr., whom he had narrowly defeated in the 2004 state senate race. Adelson won the Democratic primary with a landslide victory. In the general election, he fell short to Bartlett, who received 45% of the votes to Adelson's 36%.
Post-Political Career
After completing his term in the state senate, Adelson retired from politics. He currently works as an adjunct professor at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, teaching political philosophy.
Personal Life
Tom Adelson is married and has four children. His father, Dr. Stephen Adelson, was a renowned pediatrician in Tulsa.
