Biography of John Napier Windham Turner

John Napier Windham Turner was a Canadian statesman and political figure. He obtained his degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and also studied at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and the University of Paris in France. He held a Master's degree in Humanities and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Law.

From 1962 to 1993, Turner served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada. From May 14, 1963, to September 8, 1965, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources. From December 18, 1965, to April 3, 1967, he served as Minister without Portfolio. From April 4 to December 20, 1967, he held the position of Registrar General of Canada, responsible for the registration of vital statistics.

Turner then became the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs from December 21, 1967, to July 5, 1968, as well as the Solicitor General of Canada from April 20 to July 5, 1968. From July 6, 1968, to January 27, 1972, he served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. From January 28, 1972, to September 9, 1975, he held the position of Minister of Finance.

Turner became the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on June 16, 1984, and served in that role until June 22, 1990. From April 30 to November 4, 1984, he also served as the Prime Minister of Canada. From September 17, 1984, to February 7, 1990, he was the Leader of the Official Opposition in the House of Commons of Canada. Turner was also a Companion of the Order of Canada.
