Tom Cavanagh is a Canadian theater and film actor born on October 26, 1963, in Ottawa, Ontario. At the age of six, his parents moved him to a small village in Ghana, where the family lived until it was time for Tom to pursue his education. They later relocated to Montreal, where Tom began his studies.

During his time at Queen's University, Tom developed a passion for theater and music. He also excelled in basketball and hockey, playing for the university teams. Upon graduating, Tom received an honorary degree for his outstanding academic achievements.

In 1989, Tom started performing in theatrical productions on Broadway. He appeared in shows such as Grease, A Chorus Line, Cabaret, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and the musical Urinetown. Soon after, he made his debut on NBC television in the series Ed, for which he received a Golden Globe award and a TV Guide award.
