Biography of Tom Jones
Tom Jones, whose real name is Thomas Jones Woodward, is an English pop singer. He was born on June 7, 1940, in Pontypridd, South Wales. Jones first showed an interest in music by singing in the school and church choir. He also played drums in a local rock band, occasionally taking the microphone.
In 1964, Jones' singing was accidentally heard by London manager Gordon Mills, and the fate of the future pop star was determined. Following Mills' advice, Thomas Woodward shortened his name and became simply Tom Jones. His first commercial recordings, "It's Not Unusual" and "What's New Pussycat?", became hits in 1965, and the singer won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist that year. Jones' powerful and expressive voice allowed him to work with a wide range of musical material, from sentimental country ballads to rock and roll.
Thanks to hits like "Delilah", "Love Me Tonight", "Help Yourself", and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", Jones' fame reached its peak in the late 1960s. In 1969, seven of his albums became gold, including five studio albums. Jones' repertoire mostly consisted of lyrical cover versions of rhythm and blues, country, rock, and soul songs, which became popular hits when performed by him, such as "Green Green Grass of Home", "Proud Mary", and "Sittin' On a Dock of the Bay".
During the 1970s, Jones regularly toured the United States, including performances in the pop music capital, Las Vegas. In the 1980s, interest in him gradually faded. However, in the 1990s, when his eldest son became his new manager, Jones experienced a career resurgence. The 60-year-old singer's new recordings suddenly appeared on MTV and topped the charts, including the hit "Sex Bomb".
