Tom Reese, an American patient with stage II colorectal cancer, found himself facing an unexpected diagnosis while seeking recommendations for a wheelchair replacement at a rehabilitation center. In 2006, Tom's health started deteriorating, but neither he nor his wife, Elsie, suspected it could be cancer. Tom had been paralyzed due to a spinal injury he sustained many years ago, and together with Elsie, he sought advice at the rehabilitation center for replacing his wheelchair. During their consultation, the therapist inquired about any other health concerns Tom might have. Elsie mentioned his bowel movements with a strong odor, prompting the doctor to suggest a colonoscopy. Initially, the suspicions were related to Tom's paralysis and not cancer. However, Tom's primary physician recommended a total colonoscopy as he had just turned 50 years old. Shortly after the procedure, the gastroenterologist delivered the news to Tom that he had colorectal cancer. The doctor was confident in the diagnosis, having encountered it frequently in his practice. This news came as a complete shock to the 50-year-old man who considered himself healthy.

A Surprising Diagnosis and the Journey to Treatment

Tom recalls, "It is difficult to describe how stunned I was. But I had to quickly accept this news and take action." Jennifer, Tom and Elsie's daughter, worked with a team of surgeons, and they planned to operate on Tom. He scheduled an appointment, but prior to the surgery, he needed to undergo an EKG again due to some irregularities in the initial results. Without accurate EKG results, the surgery could not proceed.

Meanwhile, Elsie searched for information about cancer treatments online. She came across the website of Cancer Treatment Centers of America and decided to make a call, feeling a good intuition about it. Tom remembers, "I, in turn, decided that if she felt it was necessary to go there, then I would go too. When we arrived at the Cancer Treatment Center, I immediately felt that her intuition had led us to the right place." The EKG results came back normal. Although there was an error during the procedure, Tom does not believe in coincidences and thinks it happened to guide him to the Cancer Treatment Center.

A Successful Surgery and Comprehensive Care

On Monday, November 13, 2006, Tom underwent surgery. After a successful recovery, the doctor confirmed that the operation went well, and the tumor was removed. Tom received expert guidance from a dietitian and an oncology naturopath, as well as spiritual support for his ongoing healing. He received comprehensive care without any details overlooked. Elsie was allowed to stay by her husband's side around the clock. Being a registered nurse with extensive knowledge and deep empathy, she was the best person to contribute to his healing journey. The center also took care of Elsie by providing substitutes whenever she needed rest or had to run errands.

A Life Beyond Cancer

Many years have passed since the day Tom was diagnosed with cancer. He undergoes annual check-ups at the Cancer Treatment Center. Since receiving that shocking news, Tom has become a grandfather to three grandchildren, one of his two children got married, and he and Elsie celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary. Tom is now retired but leads an incredibly active life. He performs administrative work for a missionary organization, assists Elsie in pursuing her endeavors, and spends time with his family, who supported him throughout his treatment and continue to support him to this day.

One should not simply rely on the first piece of advice received. It is essential to gather as much information as possible before making decisions about one's health. They say knowledge is power, and that rings true when it comes to cancer treatment."
