Biography of Tom Savini

Tom Savini, an American director and actor, was born on November 3, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. From a young age, he became interested in experimenting with makeup, influenced by Lon Chaney's film "The Man of a Thousand Faces" (1957). While other boys played football, young Tom would spend hours sitting in front of the mirror, applying makeup to his face.

In 1969-1970, Tom served as a military photographer in Vietnam. Due to a violation of regulations, he was sent to the rear, which ultimately saved his life. When Tom Savini entered the film industry, his philosophy became "The more you do, the more you have to do." He began his career as a special makeup artist in Bob Clark's film "Deathdream" (1972). In the following film, Clark's "Deranged" (1974), he became the head makeup artist.

For the next six years, Savini worked as a photographer during the day and compiled repertoire for a provincial theater in North Carolina in the evenings. He occasionally performed as an actor and, of course, worked as a makeup artist. Later, he became a close friend of George Romero, creating special effects for his films such as "Martin" (1977), "Dawn of the Dead" (1985), and "Land of the Dead" (2005), while also making cameo appearances.

Tom Savini pays meticulous attention to the realism of his special effects and makeup. His exceptional achievements in this field earned him the "Saturn" award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films for his work in "Dawn of the Dead" (1985). He also directed the 1990 remake of "Night of the Living Dead" and three episodes of "Tales from the Darkside."

Although not many people recognize makeup and special effects specialists in person, Tom Savini is widely known, mainly due to his colorful role as Sex Machine in Robert Rodriguez's film "From Dusk Till Dawn." More recently, he appeared in Rodriguez's film "Planet Terror," playing an inept police officer. Throughout the film, he killed an old man with an IV drip and shot his own boss, the sheriff. In one scene, he was torn apart by zombies, and it can be assumed that Savini personally executed this special effect.
