High-Rise Fall Survivor

Twenty-year-old Tom Stilwell is recovering in Auckland City Hospital's intensive care unit after falling from a high-rise building. Despite sustaining broken ribs, minor neck and back fractures, a broken wrist, internal injuries, and lacerations, Stilwell is considered fortunate to be alive.

A Late-Night Stunt Gone Wrong

The incident occurred around 2 AM when Stilwell returned home from a night out with friends. His neighbor, Beth Goodwin, had also attended the party and had left with him. Unbeknownst to them, they had not brought their keys.

Unable to wait for their friends to arrive in 10 minutes, Stilwell took Goodwin's suggestion to climb to his window from the balcony of her upstairs neighbor. Geraldine Bautista, the 28-year-old neighbor who answered the door, was bewildered by the request but allowed Stilwell onto her balcony.

A Last-Minute Attempt to Stop

Bautista believed the sight of the balcony would deter Stilwell, but he impulsively jumped over the railing. Bautista managed to grab his hand momentarily but was unable to hold on. She described his descent as silent until his body hit the corrugated roof of an adjacent building.

Aftermath and Recovery

Bautista called emergency services and went downstairs, fearing the worst. Goodwin, who had been unaware of Stilwell's absence, expressed no concern that night. Bautista later learned from Stilwell's friends that he had survived the fall surprisingly well.

Stilwell is expected to make a full recovery but has no memory of the incident. He has never been known to engage in risky behavior before.
