Early Life and Education
Teodoro Casòni was born in Imola, Italy, near Bologna. He attended Liceo Torricelli in Faenza and the University of Bologna, graduating with a medical degree in 1906.
Study of Echinococcosis and Development of the Casòni Test
In 1910, Casòni moved to Sardinia to investigate echinococcosis. His work culminated in the publication of a diagnostic test in 1912 that bears his name. The test involves the intradermal injection of sterile echinococcal fluid, followed by observation of the reaction. A positive reaction results in redness at the injection site, followed by intense erythema (cutaneous anaphylaxis).
Career in Tripoli
In 1912, Casòni traveled to Tripoli (Libya) to work at the newly established Victor Emmanuel III Colonial Hospital. He served as the hospital's Chief Medical Officer for 20 years. In 1921, he was offered the position of Chief Medical Officer in Cesena, Italy, but declined.
Later Work and Return to Italy
In 1931, Casòni published a study on the medical treatment of amoebic liver abscess. Due to declining health, he left his hospital in Tripoli in 1932 and returned to his hometown of Imola.
Passing
Teodoro Casòni died in Imola in 1933 at the age of 53 from kidney disease.
