Tony Randall, whose real name was Arthur Leonard Rosenberg, was born into a Jewish family in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents were antique dealers and art enthusiasts. He had a younger sister named Edna. After completing high school, Randall attended Northwestern University for a year before moving to New York City to pursue a career in puppetry. He received training at the Sanford Meisner Theatre and studied under famous dancer Martha Graham. During this period, he adopted the stage name Tony Randall, as he felt it suited an actor better than his birth name.

Theater Career

Randall began his acting career in various theaters, performing alongside well-known actors such as Jane Koul and Ethel Barrymore. However, his theatrical pursuits were interrupted when he served in the American army during World War II. After his military service, he continued his theater work, appearing at the Olney Theatre in Maryland before returning to New York City.
