Biography of Torstein Lerhol
Torstein Lerhol, a young Norwegian man, is living with a severe form of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) which has left him unable to move. Additionally, he weighs only about 17 kg due to his condition. Despite the challenges he faces, Torstein remains optimistic and full of life. He leads an active lifestyle, traveling, studying, and having numerous friends.
Early Life and Diagnosis
Torstein Lerhol, around 20 years old, resides in the small Norwegian village of Vang, where everyone knows each other. He was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy in early childhood, and he has never been able to walk or even sit. His muscles continue to deteriorate with each passing day. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for SMA, so optimism and faith are all that remains for Torstein and his family. However, he possesses an abundance of optimism. Despite being deprived of ordinary childhood pleasures, such as playing outdoors, riding bikes, and going down slides, he never falls into despair and always demonstrates remarkable resilience, even astonishing his parents.
Education and Achievements
Torstein's parents are farmers, and he has three siblings. He fondly refers to his younger brother, Sondre, as his personal caretaker, as Sondre has been assisting Torstein since learning to walk and talk. Despite his illness, Torstein received an education and even left home at the age of 16 to attend school. Despite his condition, Torstein managed to live a full life – he made many friends, became interested in politics, and even participated in sports events. He later began studying social sciences in college, with the dream of obtaining a bachelor's degree in the near future. Unfortunately, Torstein requires assistance 24 hours a day. Several times a week, he undergoes physiotherapy sessions to maintain his muscles as much as possible. Torstein is fully aware of his situation and deeply grateful for the help he receives from the state and social services. However, the greatest joy in his life comes from traveling. Despite spending his days lying down, he has traveled to many places, including France, Scotland, Estonia, Poland, and the United States. Torstein is eager to talk about his travels and feels fortunate to have had the chance to visit different parts of the world.
Unyielding Optimism and Patriotism
Torstein Lerhol's motto is "Nothing is Impossible." One cannot help but admire the indomitable optimism of this Norwegian man who, despite his debilitating illness, continues to smile and eagerly awaits the good surprises life has to offer. He considers himself an absolute optimist and believes that life is worth living. Those who know Torstein personally speak of him warmly. His friends are always ready to assist him at a moment's notice. These friends, neighbors from the village, and classmates from school and college, take Torstein on hikes, taking turns carrying him on a stretcher. He sincerely appreciates and cherishes every moment he spends among friends.
Despite his love for travel, Torstein is a true and passionate patriot of his country. He is grateful to Norway for providing him with a high quality of life and understands how different his life could have been in a less socially prosperous country. His optimism is derived from his belief in himself, his loved ones, and his country.
