Early Career and the European Championship Triumph
Born in Xanthi, Greece, Dellas began his professional football career with Aris Thessaloniki in 1993. In 1994, he was loaned to Panserraikos for a season before returning to Aris. After a brief stint at Sheffield United, Dellas joined AEK Athens in 1999, where he became a key player and won the Greek Cup in 2000.
Dellas's international debut with the Greek national team came in 2001. He played a pivotal role in Greece's historic triumph at the UEFA European Championship 2004, scoring the winning goal in extra time against the Czech Republic in the semi-final. Greece's underdog victory captured the imagination of the world, and Dellas became a national hero.
Success in Italy and Rome
After the European Championship, Dellas moved to Italian Serie A, first with Perugia and then with Roma. At Roma, despite a challenging season, Dellas was one of only three players who escaped fan criticism. He returned to AEK Athens in 2005 and captained the team.
Coaching Career
Dellas retired from playing in 2012 and embarked on a coaching career. He guided Atromitos to the Greek Cup final in 2019 and also managed Apollon Smyrnis and Pafos FC.
