Born in Liverpool, England, Troy's musical journey began with the punk rock band 'Index' from Cheltenham, who released the single 'Jet Lag' in 1978. After some time, Troy joined the band 'Shake' alongside former members of 'The Rezillos', and together they recorded two singles.

In 1981, Troy embarked on his first solo project, releasing the single 'Thomas' under the logo 'Why-Fi'. Later that year, he joined 'The Teardrop Explodes', replacing Alan Gill, and participated in the recording of their album 'Wilder'. Despite his commitment to the band, Troy also pursued his solo career, releasing the album 'Lifeline' in 1982.

Leaving 'The Teardrop Explodes', Troy joined the band 'Fashion' in October 1982. However, he left the band in 1983 after signing a contract with 'Rough Trade Records'. His first release under 'Rough Trade Records' was the album 'I Don't Know What Love Is Anymore'. At the same time, another band signed to the label, 'The Smiths', was seeking a producer for their debut album. Troy was initially chosen for the role but was eventually replaced by John Porter as the band was not satisfied with the recorded album. The original version of the album, known as 'The Troy Tate Sessions', was unofficially circulated and sold. One of the songs from this album, 'Jeans', was later used as a single called 'This Charming Man', and another track, 'Pretty Girls Make Graves', was included in 'The Sound of The Smiths' album.

In 1984, Troy moved to 'Sire Records' and released a remix of 'Thomas' followed by his debut solo album, 'Ticket To The Dark'. He collaborated with musicians such as David Balfe, Nicky Holland, Virginia Astley, and Rolo McGinty on the album. Overall, the album received warm reviews, with 'Trouser Press' describing it as an "exceptionally good record".

Encouraged by his success, Troy released his second solo album, 'Liberty'. Unfortunately, it did not replicate the success of his first album and essentially became his swan song.
