Early Life and Career
Born on December 18, 1951, in Tel Aviv, Zvi Sherf began his coaching career in 1978-79 with Maccabi (Herzliya).
Club Successes
Sherf has led numerous Israeli clubs to domestic titles and international victories. With Maccabi Tel Aviv, he won the 1992-93 European Cup, the 1980-81 European Champions Cup, and reached the finals of the Champions Cup twice (1986-87 and 1988-89). He also guided Maccabi Ra'anana to the Israeli championship in 1999-2000. In Greece, Sherf led PAOK to a silver medal in the Greek championship in 1997-98.
National Team Coaching
Sherf served as the head coach of the Israeli national team in two stints, from 1985-1986 and 1987-1997.
International Career
Sherf's international coaching experiences include stints in Greece with Aris and PAOK, in France with Limoges CSP, in Poland with Śląsk Wrocław, and in Macedonia with MZT Skopje.
Russian Debut
In October 2003, Sherf became the first Israeli coach to work in the Russian basketball league, leading Dynamo Moscow.
Personal Life and Jewish Identity
Sherf has deep roots in the Jewish community and identifies strongly with his Jewish heritage. He believes that his success as a coach in Russia represents a victory for the Jewish people in the face of adversity.
