Early Life and Education
T?nno Kalamees, an Estonian politician, was born in the parish of Taheva in Valga County. After graduating from Tallinn Secondary School No. 2 in 1954, he pursued a degree in history at the University of Tartu.
Academic and Professional Career
Following his graduation, Kalamees served as a senior researcher at the Estonian SSR Central State Archive from 1959 to 1965. He was also a lecturer on international relations for the "Znanie" Society from 1959 to 1970.
Political Awakening
In 1972, Kalamees's political activism began when he drafted a memorandum addressed to the United Nations on behalf of two clandestine human rights organizations. The memorandum demanded an end to the "Soviet occupation" and the restoration of the Estonian Republic.
Soviet Repression
Despite his early party aspirations, Kalamees's attempt to join the Communist Party of the Estonian SSR in 1963 was met with resistance from his colleagues. He was forced to leave his position at the Central Historical Archive of the ESSR in 1975 due to pressure from the KGB.
Underground Activism
In the latter half of the 1970s, Kalamees worked as a senior bibliographer at the Fr. R. Kreutzwald State Library of the Estonian SSR and later as a night watchman at a poultry farm. He became involved with the Estonian Democratic Movement and gave lectures to various underground groups, including the Tartu Youth Movement led by J?ri Lina.
Nationalist Leader
In the late 1980s, Kalamees emerged as a prominent nationalist figure. He co-founded the Estonian National Independence Party (ERSP) in 1988 and played a key role in establishing the Estonian Citizens' Committees, a movement for Estonian independence.
Independence and Political Leadership
From 1990 to 1992, Kalamees served as Chairman of the Estonian Committee, the executive body of the Congress of Estonia, which competed with the Supreme Soviet of Estonia for political power in the republic.
