Antonio Gava: A Controversial Political Figure

Antonio Gava, a prominent Italian politician and member of the Christian Democratic Party (DC), was a pivotal figure in Italian politics for over two decades.

Political Career and Influence

Born in Castellammare di Stabia, Gava rose through the ranks of the DC, holding provincial and regional positions before being elected to Parliament in 1972. He served as Minister of Relations with Parliament in 1980 and held the post of Minister of Post and Telecommunications three times. Notably, he served as Minister of the Interior from 1988 to 1990, but was forced to resign due to a stroke.

Accusations and Trial

In 1994, Gava was arrested on charges of colluding with the Camorra, the Neapolitan crime organization. He was accused of trading favors for votes secured by the Camorra. His alleged contacts were primarily with the group led by Raffaele Cutolo and later with a group led by Carmine Alfieri of Nola.

Despite numerous accusations, Gava was acquitted after 13 years of legal battles of all charges related to the Camorra. He subsequently filed a lawsuit against the state, seeking compensation for the damage caused to his reputation and professional career.

"Viceroy of Naples" and Controversial Legacy

Gava played a powerful role in Neapolitan politics, earning the nickname "Viceroy of Naples." His long reign was the foundation of his national political influence. Known for his trademark large hat, ivory-handled cane, gold ring, and cigar, Gava was a charismatic and controversial figure.

Later Years and Death

After his legal troubles, Gava remained active in politics until his retirement in 2001. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 78 after a long illness. His legacy remains a subject of debate, with some regarding him as a corrupt politician and others as a shrewd operator in a turbulent political landscape.
