Youth and Education
Sergo Kobuladze was born on August 4 (17), 1906, in the village of Gari in present-day Georgia. From 1922 to 1924, he studied at M. I. Toadze's People's Art Studio. He later attended the Tbilisi Academy of Arts from 1924 to 1925 and again from 1928 to 1931.
Artistic Career
In 1936, Kobuladze began teaching at the Tbilisi Art Academy. He served as its director from 1942 to 1944 and became a professor in 1944. His artwork often celebrated the revolutionary struggle, with a focus on romanticizing and glorifying its figures. Notable works include "May Day Demonstration in Tiflis in 1901" (1939-1941), "Friends of Youth" (1938), "Mother's Thoughts" (1945), and "Instruction" (1957). He also produced book illustrations.
Recognition and Honors
For his contributions to art, Kobuladze was awarded the Stalin Prize second degree in 1942 for "May Day Demonstration in Tiflis in 1901." In 1963, he was designated a People's Artist of the USSR. He received two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and numerous other orders and medals throughout his career.
Legacy
Sergo Kobuladze died in 1988 and was laid to rest at the Saburtalo Cemetery. His artistic legacy continues to inspire and inform contemporary Georgian artists, showcasing the country's rich artistic heritage.
